Vernal Hatten 61, of Portage, MI departed this life Tuesday, September 26, 2023, at Medilodge of Portage.
Vernal was born August 12, 1962, in Steele, Mo. He was the sixth of eight children. His family moved to Benton Harbor in 1966. Vernal attended Benton Harbor area school. He enlisted in the United States Army after high school.
As a young child Vernal was raised up in the Community Church of God In Christ, under the leadership of the late Bishop Nathaniel Wells Sr. He participated in Sunday School and Sunshine Band.
Throughout his life Vernal worked varies jobs. His creative skills shine best while doing carpentry work with his hands. Vernal was a die heart sport fan and loved to talk sports with anyone who loved the game.
Vernals health severely declined in 2016, which caused him to live in a skilled nursing facility until his untimely demise, September 26, 2023.
Vernal leave to cherish memory four brothers, Walter Hatten of Battlecreek, MI, Gary Hatten of Muskegon, Curtis Burton and Ivan Hatten; three sisters, Joyce (Kerwin) Hudson of Coloma, MI, Mary Bell of Benton Harbor, MI and Ruby (Glen) Burton of Milwaukee, WI and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and friends.
Vernal was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Hatten Sr., Ruby Yancy Burton and Eli Burton, a sister Mary Helen James and a brother Robert Earl Hatten.
