Thomas "Ducie" Gaines Obituary

Thomas Jonta-Jamario “Ducie” Gaines, age 40, passed away on December 23, 2025, in Lansing, Michigan. Born on November 15, 1985, in Benton Harbor, Michigan, Thomas brought joy and energy to the lives of those around him from the very beginning.

A proud graduate of Benton Harbor High School, Thomas remained deeply connected to his hometown throughout his life. Known affectionately as “Ducie,” he was a vibrant presence—energetic, fun-loving, and caring. His warmth and humor left lasting impressions on everyone he met.

Thomas cherished time spent with family and friends. He had a special talent for bringing people together, whether it was hosting lively barbecues or organizing memorable holiday dinners. His love for outdoor adventures led him to enjoy camping trips, bonfires under the stars, tubing and kayaking down rivers, and traveling to explore new places. He also found joy in simple pleasures like playing video games and card games with loved ones.

He is lovingly remembered by his father, John Gaines of Texas; his long-time companion, Crystal Macey of Galesburg; his children: son Darious Macey of Galesburg and daughter Linajia Gaines of Benton Harbor; and his bonus children: Khaleah (Macey) & Tyler Feltner of Tekonsha and Deontae Macey of Galesburg. Bonus grandson, Grayson Feltner. And mother-in-law Denise (Macey) Ringman

Thomas is survived by his sisters: Nicki (Donald) Roberson of Benton Harbor, Brandi Atkins of Indianapolis, and Tobitiara Gaines of Benton Harbor; brothers Louis Atkins and John Atkins of Benton Harbor; Aunts Mary Gaines, LaQuada Caldwell, Bertha Gaines and Valencia Gaines of Benton Harbor; uncles, Arthur Gaines, Desro Gaines, David Gaines of Benton Harbor and his special friend Sarah Babcock. He leaves behind many nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends who will continue to carry forward the light he brought into their lives.

He was preceded in death by his beloved mother Brenda (Head) Gaines; maternal grandparents Thomas and Virginia Head; paternal grandparents Jimmy and Viola Gaines, aunt Jimmielee Gaines and Uncle Earl Head. And best friends Sebastian Wilbur Jr and Dan... E. Gaines.

Thomas’s legacy is one of laughter-filled gatherings, heartfelt connections, and unforgettable moments shared with those he loved most. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
