Steven Dortch Obituary

Steven Scott Dortch, born on December 31, 1999, in St. Joseph MI, to his Parents Evone Tillman and Steven Bates. In the year 2002, he was adopted to the Surrogate Parents James and Regina Dortch.  He passed away on September 12, 2024, in Indianapolis, Indiana at the tender age of 24. Steven, affectionately known as the life of the party, brought joy and laughter to all who knew him. His love for dance and his goofy, outspoken nature made him a beloved figure in his community.

Steven attended Berrien Springs Public Schools and in 2018 he relocated to Indianapolis Indiana with his aunt Shalonda Purnell and longtime partner Donal Gant and later in 2020 moved in with his Big Cousin Uncle Marcello Gant to be closer to his employment. Steve lived in Indianapolis for 7 years he created a special bond with DJ his cousin whom he called Soul Brother #1.  He graduated in 2018 completing his education with a high school diploma at Arsenal Tech High School. He was employed as a cashier at a convenience store, where his friendly demeanor was appreciated by customers and colleagues alike.

In his free time, Steven was an avid athlete, participating in basketball, football, soccer, and baseball. His spiritual life was centered around his participation at Mt. Zion Cathedral of Praise COGIC, where he was a valued member of the congregation.

Steven is survived by his surrogate parents, James and Regina Dortch; his surrogate grandmother Josephine Robinson, his mother, Evone Tillman; his father, Steven Bates; his brothers, Bryce D. Hall, Charles Dortch, Elijah Dortch, and Cameron Dortch; and his sisters, Taraji M. Denson-Neely, Charnay (James) Robinson, Hillary Dortch, Zoe Dortch, and Gabrielle Dortch. He also leaves behind 13 extended brothers and sisters, a special aunt, Shalonda Purnell, her partner Donal Gant, and Big Cousin Uncle Marcello Gant, along with numerous aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.

Steven was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Mr. Tillman and Missionary Brenda Denson; his aunts, Venina Tillman, Jackie Dortch Riddick, and Minnie Dortch Rayner; his uncle, Todd Robinson.

Steven's radiant spirit and infectious laughter will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him. His memory will be cherished forever by his loving family, numerous friends, and all who were touched by his vibrant personality.
