Ruthelma Rice, 81, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt, passed away peacefully at her home on October 14, 2025. She was born on November 18, 1943, in Eutaw, Alabama, to the late Lue Elle and Hezekiah Rice.
In the late 1960s, Ruthelma moved from Alabama to Chicago, Illinois, later bringing her mother and siblings along to build a new life together. She worked diligently in several factories throughout the Chicago area before settling in Benton Harbor, Michigan, in 1984.
Ruthelma was a devoted member of New Paradise Baptist Church in Benton Harbor, where she joyfully sang in the choir and faithfully attended Bible study until her health declined. Known for her warm spirit and open heart, her home was a gathering place for family and friends — a true cornerstone of love and hospitality.
She leaves to cherish her children: Alonzo Rice of Benton Harbor, MI; Timothy Rice of Maryland; Georgette Rice of Kalamazoo, MI; Ebony Rice of Benton Harbor, MI; Lasona Rice of Benton Harbor, MI; and Starsky Rice of Benton Harbor, MI; along with a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and extended relatives.
She is preceded in death by her son, Trent Rice; daughters Norita Ray, Wanda Jean Rice, Anna Ruth Rice, and Hazel D. Rice.
Her legacy is also carried on by her siblings: brothers Eddie Rice of Cleveland, OH; James Parker Rice of Des Moines, IA; and Benjamin Rice of Chicago, IL; sisters Arvella of Aliceville, AL; Cora (Robert) Jones of Birmingham, AL; and Mae Ella Mann of Chicago, IL. She is reunited in eternal rest with her five brothers — James, Willie Edward, Walter, Griffin, and Curtis — and five sisters — Sarah, Martha Lee, Mary Jane, Geneva, and Lizzie.
We take comfort in knowing that she is now at peace in the arms of our Heavenly Father. Until we meet again, we will carry her love with us always.
