Royal “Ray” Watson was born on April 13th, 1941 in Benton Harbor, MI to Nona and Roy Watson.
Royal was a raised under the former leadership of Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church. And accepted Jesus Christ as his savior at Greater Mt. Calvary of South Bend, IN.
He attended Benton Harbor High School where he graduated in 1960. Following high school, Royal became a businessman and a pillar within his community.
Loved by all who knew him. Royal was a very humble and genuine person who would help anyone in need.
Royal knew how to “Secure the Bag,” as his first business was Watson’s BBQ. Following the success of that business, he later opened Slosson’s, Larry’s, and BJ’s—all within the Benton Harbor area.
In his leisure time, Royal enjoyed watching CNN and Keeping Up with the Kardashians, traveling especially to Las Vegas, and hunting. While Royal was very successful in his business ventures, he cherished his grandchildren the most.
Royal was known as a quiet man but his presence was felt whenever he entered a room through his warm smile and tall stature.
Royal was proceeded in death by his parents, Nona and Roy Watson, two siblings, Rachel Watson and Wadell Watson, and two nieces, Stacey Watson and Melinda Watson.
He is survived by his loving and doting wife of 23 years, Rochelle “Shelly” Watson, two daughters Kymberly (Loren) Thomas and Carmell Granderson, son Burnell Granderson, seven grandchildren Christopher Davis, Kristle Davis, Deshawnay Kline, Sarvaria Mitchell, TJ Mitchell, Trinity Mitchell, and Aubree Granderson, four great-grandchildren, Avionna Crum, Melanie Davis, Lyric Brown, and Arieonna Davis, one sister, Mamie Watson, three brothers, Jesse (Mary) Watson, Willie (Barbara) Watson, and Benny Watson, and a host of in-laws, nieces, nephews, and other family and friends. Although he will be missed dearly, Royal’s legacy will live on forever.
