Rosie Murkey Obituary

Rosie Mae Murkey, was one of 7 children born to the late Dewell Blanks and Rosie (Glass-Blanks) McCallister in St. Louis, MO. Shortly after her birth, the family moved to Benton Harbor, MI where they were raised. Subsequently, raising a family with Charles E. Murkey, three sons: Veron L. Murkey, Vernell L. Murkey and VerLon C. Murkey. Here, she would learn the importance of education as well as hard work. Later, Rosie, worked for Benton Harbor Area Schools and Whirpool for 15 plus years. Accepting Jesus Christ, joined choir where she continued her love of singing in various local and state-wide churches, eventually becaming a member of the local gospel group the Vocalaires along with her younger sister Doris. She lived a life full of love and happiness.

Rosie leaves to cherish her loving memory her sons Vernell L. Murkey of Benton Harbor, MI; VerLon C. Murkey of Fort Wayne, IN; a daughter-in-law Debora (Veron) Murkey of St. Louis, MO; 4 grandsons, Cameron (Deidra) Murkey of St. Louis, MO; Jamie Murkey of New York, NY; Jeremy Lee of St. Louis, MO; and Vershon E. Clark of Benton Harbor, MI; 10 great-grandchildren, Cameron Murkey, II, Cassidy Murkey, Charles Murkey, Niya Lee of St. Louis, MO; Camiya Clark & Camry Williams of Benton Harbor, MI; Vernia Clark, Vernisha Clark, Verniya Clark, Vershon Clark, II of Indianapolis, IN; her eldest sister Mrs. Elosie (Herman) Hoskins of Chicago, IL; two brothers William Blanks and Samuel L. Blanks of Benton Harbor, MI; two Aunts Mrs. Lula (Joe) Carpenter of Battle Creek, MI; and Mrs. Olivia (Lawrence) Glass of Detroit, MI; one uncle George Blanks of Meridian, MS; a good friend Sharon Spencer of Benton Harbor, MI; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, god-children and other friends. She was preceded in death by her parents Dewell Blanks & Rosie (Glass-Blanks) McCallister; her grandparents Steve and Lula Glass; her eldest son Veron L. Murkey; her younger sister, Doris (Blanks) Joseph and two younger brothers Michael L. Blanks, Sr and Tyrone “Tony” Blanks.
