Obituary

Pastor Solomon Black was born on Monday, August 15, 1927 to the union of the late Walter and Estella Black in Coahoma County in Mississippi. Solomon Black at the age of 94 pulled off mortal and put on immortality, making the transition to his heavenly home on Sunday, July 31, 2022, in Stevensville, Michigan.

Pastor Solomon Black worked on the farm with his father growing up and accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at St. Peters Baptist Church in Earl, Arkansas at the age of 16.  The Lord called Solomon into the ministry in his 50’s while living in Carson Lake, Arkansas.   Solomon began pastoring two churches: Princess Chaplin Church in Luxora, Ark as well as Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Burdette, Ark.

He who finds a wife finds a good thing, and obtained favor of the Lord. Proverbs 18:22 Solomon found his good thing and united in Holy Matrimony to the queen of his life, Mother Ellen Sanders on April 04, 1984, in Dell, Arkansas.  Shortly after this union, he retired from Janitorial services and relocated to his family to Benton Harbor, Michigan in the summer of 1989.

Rev. Black and his family joined with Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church in Benton Harbor, MI, under the leadership of the late Pastor H. C. Christian. I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work. John 9:5 Reverend Solomon Black later was installed as the Senior Pastor of Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church.  Pastor Black was a spirit led leader, and after many years of pastoral leadership he united in Christian fellowship with Israelite Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Pastor Joe N. Bruins.

Pastor Black loved his wife, he often reminded us that he promised God that he would take care of her.  He was faithful to that promise. They are well loved and known in the community. Solomon enjoyed sleeping, walking, singing, and preaching. He also enjoyed listening and traveling to hear Quartet groups perform. One of his favorite groups were the Gospel Believers from Grand Rapids, MI. Solomon would remind his family that he loved all of them! Due to health issues Solomon and Ellen were living in separate facilities for over 201 days. On July 21, 2022, on his granddaughter Veronica’s birthday (whom he helped raise), he was reunited with his wife Ellen. While holding Ellen’s hand, he told her “Now I can go home.”  Ten days later, Solomon went home to be with his Father.

Pastor Black leaves to cherish his fond memories his wife, Mother Ellen Black who he affectionately called “Mae;”; eight daughters, Bertha (James) Rice, Myrtle (Arthur) Mitchell, Diane (Leroy) Love, Carrie (Earnest) Battles, Dorothy (Donald) Marshall, Joyce (Geno) Jones, Cynthia Sanders, and Kattie (Jamare) Razor; three sons, Eddie Black, Tyrone Black and Donald Black; one brother, Moses (Bessie) Black; two sisters, Precious Davis and Gussie Estell; two special brother-in-laws, Dave Sanders and Harry Sanders; God children Kimberly Sanders, Ruthie Atkins, Janet (Dawayne) Bonds, Candylaries Martin, Wendall (Patricia) Lampkins, Tamika Clark, Ti’ Keshia Gordon, Lesaline Wallace and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nephews, nieces, family and friends.
