Olivia James Obituary

Olivia James, a beloved educator, leader, and devoted family member, passed away peacefully on September 19, 2025, at the age of 75, in St. Joseph, MI. Born on March 24, 1950, in Marks, Mississippi. Olivia's life was a testament to love, service, and dedication to the betterment of her community.

Olivia was a proud student at Benton Harbor High School Class of 1968 and continued her education at Western Michigan University, where she earned both a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1973 and a Master of Arts degree in 1988. Throughout her career, Olivia worked tirelessly for Benton Harbor Area Schools, where she held various roles as an educator and administrator. She was known for her commitment to her students' success, balancing teaching and leadership with grace and compassion. Her impact on countless lives will be remembered by all who had the privilege of learning from and working alongside her.

In addition to her professional accomplishments, Olivia was an active member of the community. She was a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, where she fostered a spirit of sisterhood and mentorship, and she was involved in the Strong Women of Faith Breast Cancer Support Group, where she gave her time and energy to supporting others through their health journeys.

Olivia’s strength, wisdom, and dedication to service were evident in every aspect of her life. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, with her family always being her highest priority. Her legacy lives on through her beloved husband, Benson James; her children: Cynthia (Labarron) Johnson of Detroit, MI; Olivia (Kevin) Martin of Kalamazoo, MI; and Aaron James of Chicago, IL; and her grandchildren: Erica Smith, Daniel Blackburn, Taylor Smith, Jasmine (Michael) Dent, and McKenzie James. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren: Eric Smith, Sophia Blackburn, and Elijah Blackburn; her siblings: Ruby Patterson, Peggy Greer, Dorothy Grubbs, and Matthew Ellis Jr.; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Olivia will be remembered as a woman who embodied sisterhood, leadership, and a lifelong dedication to service. Her mentorship, unwavering support, and loving spirit left a lasting mark on all who were fortunate enough to know her.
