N L Hines Obituary

In life we have pleasures with our love ones, we have sorrows and joy; but thank God for the memories death cannot destroy.

Again death has invaded the ranks of the Hines and Lloyd family, carrying away our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend-NL Hines Sr.

NL Hines Sr., son of the late Pastor Joseph Nathan Lee Hines and Mrs. Flora Mae (Lloyd) Hines was born August 20, 1948 in Clarksdale, Mississippi.  His family moved to Benton Harbor, Michigan when NL was one year old.

NL attended Boyton Elementary School, Benton Harbor Jr. High School and Benton Harbor Sr. High School.  He graduated from Benton Harbor Sr. High School in 1967.  In 1968, NL was drafted into the United States Army and served during the Vietnam War.  He served his country until 1969, when he received an honorably discharged.  On June 19, 1977, he received an Associate of Arts degree from Laney College, Oakland, CA. NL was the first of the Hines/Lloyd family to graduate from college.

NL accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at a young age under the leadership of the late Pastor C.M. Jones at Beautiful Gate Baptist Church on Main Street in Benton Harbor.  In 1988, NL united in Christian fellowship with Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of his father. One Sunday morning, as his brother Pastor James L. Hines delivered the sermon at Pleasant Grove, NL rededicated his life to Christ.    He faithful served as the Choir Director and Sunday School Teacher.

On August 23, 2003, NL united in holy matrimony to the love of his life, Tanga Sallie; one son was born to this union.

NL was known for his sharp fashion and mechanical skills he learned from his father.  He took great pride in working for his father at Hines Garage-Benton Harbor, MI. He also enjoyed mentoring the youth of the community in sports events and was passionate about their future.

On August 19, 2020, at home with his loving wife by his side, NL departed this life for his home in glory.

Precious memories of his life will forever live in the heart of his beautiful wife of 17 years, Mrs. Tanga Hines; his mother, Flora Mae Hines; his children, Nicole Farmer, Sherronda Sallie, Sherold Sallie and NL Hines II; four grandsons, Duke Mondy, Marques Mondy, DeMarcus Mondy and Kaysen Cron; his siblings, Staten Hines, Rosie Hines, Daisy Hines, Eugene (Joyce) Hines, Pastor James (Leontyne) Hines and Steve Hines; three aunts, Ocsie Parker, Doris Applewhite and Mary Lloyd; four lifelong friends, Pastor Rodney Gulley, William “Sharp” Archibald, Milton Smith and Charles Bunting Jr.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family of in-laws and friends.

NL was preceded in death by his father, his paternal grandparents, Staten and Truelove Hines, his maternal grandparents, Dan and O.C. Lloyd, his beloved siblings, Shirley Hines and Lee Nathan Hines. He was also preceded in death by uncles and aunts that helped rear him-uncles, Lee Dale Lloyd and Adell Lloyd, Doug Hines, Sam London and Epson Johnson, Sr.; aunts, Rosie Glasper, Martha Brady, Alberta Buels, Truelove London, and Irene Johnson; and a longtime friend, Larry Stansberry.
