Mary Williams Obituary

A Shepard’s Mother

Mary June Williams was born in Independence, Louisiana on May 26, 1945, to Zola (Brown) Washington and James Brown.  While living in Louisiana, she later found the love of her life, Robert Sr. Williams (Now Deceased), and married.  They moved to Benton Harbor, MI, and raised 8 children, 6 who were biological in marriage and 2 accepted in love before unity in marriage.

Upon her husband's death, she decided to stay in Benton Harbor, MI to raise her children. It was tough at times, but she always did her best to make sure her children were well taken care of, and that they had a happy, loving, and blessed home.

Later she joined Trinity Church of God In Christ and became a devoted lifetime member.  She served faithfully.  She loved her church family and made sure her children learned about God.  It was a must.

Working in her yard and growing flowers was one of her favorite pastime hobbies as well as walking.  She loved the beauty of flowers, even wearing colorful floral clothing. Listening to church music and other styles of music was enjoyable, too, especially, when her children would come to visit on a fun day.

She was a phenomenal woman and definitely one of a kind.  To know her was to love her without cause.  She came across people as gentle, loving, understanding, and caring, but yet, stern to others’ needs.  She worked many odd jobs to take care of her family as well as attended Benton Harbor Adult Education Program to get her GED.  She was always determined to learn more and apply it, to be at her best. AND, THAT SHE WAS.  A Shephard’s Mother…Psalms 23.  The Lord Is My Shephard, Thou Shall Not Want, her favorite Bible Scripture.

Mary Williams transitioned from this Earth on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, in Benton Harbor, MI surrounded by her family at home.  Her mission was to fight like a Prayer Warrior until the bitter end, which she did. The love she shared with her family and friends was unmeasurable and in no comparison to the love expressed by her in her own “Special” way.

Mary Williams is survived by her 3 children Patricia Ward, Diane Thomas, and Larry Williams, whom she loved dearly. Three sisters, Eola Griffins, Beverly (Thomas) Headspeth, and Emma (Leon Nelson). Two brothers, Joseph (Beverly Brown) and James Jr. Brown.  Stepchildren Barbara Jean, Sarah Williams, and Geraldine Williams, Wallace Williams, Johnny Williams, and Vernon Williams. Several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.  A host of nieces, nephews, friends, and family, all who loved, cherished, honored, and will miss her dearly.

Mary June Williams is preceded in death by her mother and father, Zola (Brown) Washington and James Brown. Maternal and Paternal grandparents. Five children, Robert Jr. Williams, Mary Ann Williams, Corlette Williams/Price, JoAnn Williams, and Leroy Williams. Stepchildren: Robert Sr. Williams, Ronnie Williams, Betty Sue, and Willie Mae Williams…Seven sisters, Deloris Brown, Marie Brown, Heneretta Brown, Mary James Brown, Edwina Brown, Zola Fuller, and Yvonne Martin, and four brothers…Grant James Washington, Herman Brown, Freddie Brown, and Mitchell Washington.
