Martha Gipson Obituary

Mother Martha Gipson affectionately known as Moy age 95 was born on October 15, 1925, to Grover and Elnora Jennings in Parmer, Missouri.

Martha Gipson was the third child of seven children. She accepted Christ at the St. Mark Baptist Church where she remained until her sunset. She was united in holy matrimony to Guss Gipson in 1946. To that union, five children were born. Mother Gipson was a hard worker who worked as a migrant laborer in the fields. She picked and chopped cotton during the day and went home in the evening to prepare hot meals for her children.

In 1967 she relocated to Benton Harbor and became a cook at Rosie’s Fish Place. Later she became a foster grandmother in the classroom at Columbus School. Home health care was another source of employment for her. Mother Gipson was known for helping people. Her home was an open house where children in the neighborhood, could visit and received love and food. She loved cooking and attending church where she participated in Sunday Church School, sang in the senior choir, and was a member of the Mother’s Board. Some of her favorite activities were to attend quartet singing programs, to travel to eat out, and to fellowship with family and friends. Most of all, she loved her family.

On Saturday, December 19, 2020, God decided that it was time for her to depart from this world and rest in his arms. He wanted to reunite her with her family members who had gone before her.

Martha Gipson leaves to cherish her memories two sweet and loving daughters; Bobby Coleman and Betty (Dennis) Wyrick, two sons Guss (Gloria) Gipson Walter Gipson all of Benton Harbor, two adopted sons Sylvester Taylor Grand Rapids, MI Demarcus Hockett, of Benton Harbor.15 grandchildren; Deborah Bodley, Harland (Tomiko) Taylor, Lavera ( Earbie) Mays, Marquita Gipson, James Cory, and Marcus March, Walteria Robinson, all of Benton Harbor, Myron ( Lawanda) Taylor and Carlotta Taylor of Kansa City, MO, Henry ( Patrice) Coleman of AZ, Richard (Barbara) Coleman, Shantel (Jimmy) Craft and Fayelon Terry of Pontiac, MI, Lacola ( Eugene) Walker and Roy Lee Williams of Gary, IN. 46 great-grandchildren, 43 great-great-grandchildren, as well a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.
