Lenon McAfee Obituary

Lenon Earl “Buck” McAfee

“So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, immortality, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall he be brought to pass the saying is written, Death is swallowed up in victory”.  1st Corinthians 15:54

On a foggy day, September 6, 1953, a midwife delivered a handsome, kind, and unassuming baby boy who was born to Rev. Milton P. and Pearlie McAfee. Before he took up residency in the household and took his place, three sisters were there to receive him. On this day, a star was born. Aka “Buck, or Kind ole Uncle George”. Although it is not 100% confirmed, it is rumored that his nieces, Tara and Chari would antagonize him by calling him Kind Ole Uncle George and take off running.

On February 28, 2024, after a short illness, Buck departed this world surrounded by his son Kojack (Na’eem). Buck confessed his belief in Christ at an early age under the leadership of the late Pastor, Rev. M. Raspberry.  Buck had made his peace with the Lord and decided that he did not want any additional treatments.

Buck attended Eau Claire Public Schools and graduated from Eau Claire High School in 1971. Upon graduation, he attended Ferris State University, Grand Rapids, Michigan. Upon leaving Ferris State, he enlisted in the United States Army from October 16, 1974, until October 13, 1978.   He continued his service to his country with the National Guard from April 26, 1982, thru April 25, 1992.   He was employed in several labor jobs and retired from the Cook Nuclear Plant, Bridgeman, Michigan where he served as a Security Guard.

Buck resided in Kansas City, Missouri, and Phoenix, Arizona before returning to Michigan. He was known as the family griller and was famous for his briskets. He loved making brownies for his nieces and nephews. Buck did not like the name Lenon and insisted on being called Buck. The kids would call him Uncle Buck, and he always responded, “I aint your uncle, I’m Buck”. Buck had two sayings that he often said, “If you aint got nothing good to say about anybody, don’t say nothing”, and “You can work me long, but you can’t work me hard”, and Proper Savages.

On December 31, 2016, he married the love of his life, the late Gwendolyn “Gwen” Yvonne Sims. They raised three sons, and a host of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great grands.

Buck leaves to cherish precious memories, his sons, Kojak (Na’eem) Sims, Carwen “LaVell” Sims of Benton Harbor, MI, his mother Pearlie McAfee of Eau Claire, MI, five sisters, Alzena Crumble, Jackie (Clarence)Hart, Marie (Paul) Oberholtzer, Vera Holmes of Benton Harbor, MI., and Jannie Kiser of Eau Claire, Michigan; two brothers, Rev. Don (Denise) McAfee of Benton Harbor, MI and Minister Steve McAfee of Eau CLaire, MI; three nephews who were raised as his brother, Dennis (Caitlin) of St. Joseph, MI., Pastor Maurice (Garcia) McAfee, and Scott Coburn of Benton Harbor, MI. He leaves his extended Sims Family, four sisters-in-law, Linda Muhammad, Brenda Broyles, Glanda “Kay” Whistnant of Benton Harbor, MI., Annie Delores (Lawrence) Najieb of Chicago, IL., and one brother-in-law, John Whistnant of Benton, Harbor.  He leaves to mourn his passing, a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Buck was preceded in death by his wife, Gwen (2023), and son Lenny Broyles (2023), father, the late Rev. Milton P. McAfee, sister, Doris Jean Cornelius, and brother-in-law, Kelvin Cornelius. In addition, he was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, the late Henry McAfee and Alberta McAfee Lovelace, and his maternal grandparents, Willie and Maud Cole. Buck will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

A special thanks to his aunts, Mae Ruth Allen and Bobbie Wright, and cousin Nazotzke Cooper who made it possible for Buck to be covered at all times. Thank you to everyone for your calls, words of encouragement, and prayers.
