Kersey Barnes Obituary

On September 19, 2022, Kersey William Barnes entered a new realm of life as he passed away at Spectrum Lakeland Medical Center while undergoing treatment following an injury.

Kersey Barnes was born February 6, 1936, to Mom Ruby Brown of Point Pleasant, Missouri, and to Father George Wesley Barnes of Pontotoc, Mississippi. Both Kersey’s parents relocated to Benton Harbor Michigan at a very young age. Kersey had a special connection with his Mom Ruby Brown up until her passing on May 7, 2005, at the perfect age of 86 which happens to be the exact same age at which Kersey gained his heavenly wings.

Kersey had a zest for life and graduated from Benton Harbor High School in 1954 to later go on and serve our country by joining the Military for the Army Private First-Class Division from 1959 to 1961. Upon completion of his active duty, Kersey returned home to Benton Harbor, MI where he became a Patrolman for the city of Benton Harbor Police Department.

Kersey in his spare time enjoyed attending musical concerts and listening to his favorite artist Luther Vandross. He also accepted Christ early on and became an active member of Union Memorial AME Church in Benton Harbor, Michigan where he enjoyed attending regularly and going to church events until his health declined.

Kersey is survived by his sons Keith Bogan and Tyrone Brewer. He is also survived by grandsons Keith Shannon and special grandson DaMario Shannon. Also, leaving to cherish or value his memory is granddaughter Charkeia Shannon, two sisters: Shirley Barnes and Jetaun Barnes, two brothers: Wesley Barnes and Douglas Barnes, and a host of other loving relatives.

Kersey was preceded in death by his Mom Ruby Brown, his Father George Wesley Barnes, a sister Oretha Barnes, a special friend Evelyn M. Bogan, and his maternal and paternal grandparents, all of whom are not forgotten.
