Herman Sylvester Crayton was called home to be with his "Lord" on Sunday, June 26, 2022, after a short illness. He quietly slept away with no suffering.
Herman, called (dada) by his children, was well known in the community in which he lived. Herman was born on January 1, 1941, to Esker Bownes Sr. and Georgia Lee Johnson in Caruthersville, Missouri. Looking to provide a better living for his then-wife (Bettie) and children, he relocated to Benton Harbor, Michigan in 1966.
Herman is survived by his four children Sylvester Lee Crayton, Regina (Jerry McClinton), Carolyn Hegar, and Marilyn Sanders. Sisters Barbara McGee, Daisy Bownes, Esker Bownes, Jr., Albert (Leslie) Bownes, Armentha (Victor) Williford, and Maureen (Richard) Neal. 11 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Last but definitely not least his long-term caretaker Mabel Avant.
Herman was preceded in death by his father, mother, 1 sister (Etta), 1 great-great-granddaughter (Alexis McIntosh) 1 stepson Robert Earl Goodman.
