Flozene King, age 87, was born on November 20, 1938, in Sardis, Mississippi, to Minnie Matthews and Talcum Cox. She was lovingly raised by her stepfather, Will Strong. At an early age, Flozene moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where she attended North Division High School and earned her diploma. Committed to education and personal growth, she later continued her studies and received her degree from Lake Michigan College in Benton Harbor, Michigan.
Flozene began her professional career as an Occupational Therapist, dedicating herself to helping others live fuller, more independent lives. In 1970, she relocated to Covert, Michigan with her husband, John King, and her three children, Vicki, Patrice, and Marvin. While in Covert, twin boys, Anthony and Preston were added to her legacy. Flozene later devoted many years of service to Covert Public Schools, where she faithfully worked until her retirement.
A woman deeply rooted in faith, Flozene accepted Christ in 1986 under Pastor W.C. Askew at Faith Evangelistic COGIC, a church co-founded by her mother, Mother Minnie Matthews. She later became a dedicated member of Lily of the Valley Church under the late Bishop L.C. Berry and remained faithful under the leadership of Bishop Darryl K. Williams. Her life was a living testament to her love for God, her unwavering faith, and her commitment to her church community.
Flozene was the heart and foundation of her family — a true matriarch whose love, wisdom, and strength shaped generations. She found joy in praying, traveling, sewing, reading her Bible, mentoring others, journaling, scrapbooking, shopping, and staying informed on current events and politics. Known as a pillar in her community, she was a servant leader who gave her time and voice to causes that uplifted others. Her leadership and service extended across many organizations, including serving as President of the NAACP, Founder of Covert’s Black Arts Fair, Van Buren United Civic Organization, Covert Public Schools Board of Education, Covert Township Park Committee, 4-H Club, and as a devoted Sunday School teacher. Her life’s work was rooted in service, leadership, and empowering others to rise.
Flozene’s legacy is not only measured in years, but in generations. At the time she was called home, she was surrounded by four generations of her family — a powerful reflection of the life she built and the love she poured into each one.
She leaves to cherish her memory her four children: Vicki (Victor) Tucker, Patrice Strong, Marvin (Maureen) Strong, and Preston Walker; fifteen grandchildren: Tashia, Anitra, Dartanya, Derrick, Tekayla (William), Uniquka, Kaitlyn, Steffone (Jessica), Marvin Jr., Preston Jr., Brooks, Brianna, Anthony, Jordan, and Morris; thirty-one great-grandchildren; and twenty-eight great-great-grandchildren; her beloved goddaughter, Tiffany Gordon; her cherished lifelong friends, Mae Lucas and Daisy Brown; along with a host of extended family, church family, and dear friends who loved her deeply.
She was preceded in death by her mother Minnie Matthews; her father Talcum Cox; her stepfather Will Strong; her husband John King; and her son Anthony Brooks.
Flozene King transitioned peacefully gaining her wings on March 28, 2026, in the comfort of her home, embraced by the love of her family — surrounded by generations as a true testament to the extraordinary life she lived. Her legacy of faith, strength, leadership, and love will continue to live on in all who were blessed to know her.
She will be deeply missed and forever cherished. Though she is no longer with us in body, her spirit, wisdom, and love will remain in our hearts forever.
