Deaconess Debra Marie Fox, born Debra Marie Mitchell on June 23, 1953, to Edward M. Mitchell, Sr. and Bernice Mitchell in Benton Harbor, Michigan, went home to be with the Lord on May 14, 2026, surrounded by the people she loved.
She was 72 years old. Debra began her nursing journey at Lake Michigan College, earning her Licensed Practical Nurse certification before continuing her education at Western Michigan
University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a master's in educational leadership. As a Registered Nurse, she had a forty-year career as a community nurse, serving in
multiple roles across the region and touching the lives of patients, colleagues, and students alike. She brought the same skill, steadiness, and care to every role she held.
On August 31, 1985, she married Deacon Freddie Fox, and together they built a home rooted in love, faith, and welcome, where the food was good, the company was better, and you were always
loved and welcomed. Debra was a devoted wife, a present and caring mother, and a woman whose door and table were always open. She was a faithful member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church
in Kalamazoo for over thirty years, where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, and studied the Word with the same dedication she brought to every area of her life.
She also brought that same dedication to the card table. If you sat down across from Debra expecting a relaxed game, you learned otherwise quickly. She played to win and laughed the whole
time. The gift of laughter was a particularly generous one she gave freely to everyone around her. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward M. Mitchell, Sr. and Bernice
Mitchell, and her beloved sister, Terry Moore.
She leaves to cherish her memory her brother, Edward M. Mitchell, Jr. (La Ron); her husband of over forty years, Deacon Freddie Fox; daughters Tisha Mitchell, Tona Flowers, and Dr. Whitney
Weathers (Carlton); sons Antwon Fox (Annette), Elder Zacarrii Hamby (Kimberly), and Brock Smith; god sister Tracy Haire; special friends turned family Pastor Rev. Albert and Helen Adams; her
sister-friend of over thirty years, Patricia Pulphus; nineteen grandchildren; fourteen great- grandchildren; and a host of family and friends who will miss her more than
words can say.
“Well done, good and faithful servant. — Matthew 25:23
