Charles Roberts Obituary

Charles Lavern Roberts of Benton Harbor, Michigan, was born on September 29, 1942, in Mariana, Arkansas, to the late Roosevelt Roberts and Lizzie Davis. He peacefully departed this life on December 10, 2025, surrounded by family and friends at Corewell Health Lakeland Medical Center in St. Joseph, Michigan.

Charles was baptized under the leadership of the late Rev. Walter L. Brown at Ebenezer Baptist Church. He received his education in the Arkansas public school system.

Charles was known as a loving, kind, and joyful man who never met a stranger. He truly enjoyed spending time with family and friends, especially sitting in his yard on Bishop Street with his buddies, laughing and sharing stories. Affectionately known as the “Real OG” of Bishop Street, Charles’ presence brought warmth and joy to all who knew him.

One of Charles’ greatest joys was time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who filled his heart with happiness and laughter. He also enjoyed fishing with his friends and his great-grandson, Alijah, lovingly known as “Big Boi,” until his health no longer allowed him to do so.

Charles had a true passion for working on cars, taking special pride in washing and detailing them until they sparkled. His attention to detail and dedication reflected his personality and pride in whatever he did.

Charles shared a beautiful love story with his devoted wife of forty-five years, Edna Ruth Roberts. Their bond was evident to everyone who saw the way he looked at her with a warm smile and lovingly called her “baby,” as she smiled right back at him. Their love was genuine, enduring, and inspiring.

Charles Lavern Roberts will be deeply missed and forever cherished by all whose lives he touched.

Charles leaves to cherish his loving memory, his devoted wife, Edna Ruth Roberts; his brother, Lee Chess Roberts; and his daughters: Rosetta Allison of California, Cawana Maxie and Vickie Joiner-Hudson of Benton Harbor, Michigan, Nieta (Jacques) Loubeau of Virginia, and Denise Ware. He is also survived by one son/nephew, Keith Davis of Baroda, Michigan.,

He leaves sixteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren, all who brought him great pride and joy. Charles is further survived by four sisters-in-law: Ceretha Richardson and Glennice Rogers of St. Louis, Missouri; Odessa Ludington of Chicago, Illinois; and Majorie Roberts of Louisiana.

He also leaves a very special friend, Doyle Brown—affectionately known as “Moose”—who remained his loyal buddy until the very end. Charles is survived by his four goddaughters: Kathy, Pam, Karyn, and Tina, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. Special recognition is extended to The Bishop Gang, whose bond with Charles was truly meaningful.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents; his son, Charles Bonds; his brothers, Roosevelt, William, Otis, Frank, and Lemart; and his sisters, Jean, Virginia, Mary, and Elizabeth.

"I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7
