Alma Butler Obituary

Life History

Alma was born on December 14, 1939, in Victoria, Arkansas to the union of Will and Mary Stewart (who both preceded her in death). She lived in Victoria, Arkansas until 1957 when she moved to Benton Harbor, Michigan. After moving there, she met and married Onie B. Nolen. To this union, she had two daughters. Alma’s first marriage ended in 1967, then she met and married George Butler in July of 1969. They were together until George was called home to rest. Alma was a beautiful, outgoing woman who loved the Lord and dedicated her life to being a woman of God.

She obtained a position with Industrial Ball Rubber where she retired and became a beautician. In the neighborhood, the children knew her as the candy lady. She enjoyed seeing the children come to her door for cookies and candy. She would talk to them and encourage them to behave and be safe. No one was a stranger to Alma, and she would always talk to them about the Lord. She joined Unity Temple Church of God in Christ where she became an evangelist and a mother of the church. She served in whatever capacity she could doing the work of the Lord. She loved her church family and spoke very highly of them.

Alma was a practical joker. She would pull a prank on you if you weren’t watching. She kept everyone laughing. As her health began to deteriorate, she moved to Louisville, Kentucky with her daughter in May of 2025. She enjoyed being around her grandchildren, great grands, and great, great grands, they put a smile on her face when they visited. She resided in Louisville until God called her home to rest in the early morning hours on November 16th.

To anyone that would listen, she would talk about how she was spoiled by her family.

Alma had a daughter (Kathyrn Nolen), 2 brothers (Will and Larry Stewart) and a sister (Dorothy Marshall) that preceded her in death.

She leaves to mourn, her daughters: Rose Nolen and Tonisha Butler, sisters: Armor Stahls, Earnestine Williams, Linda (Tyrone) Harris, brothers: Isaiah (Barbara) Stewart, Levon Stewart and Cleatus Stewart, goddaughter: Gina Partee, caregiver and goddaughter: Bonnie McCall, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
