Sylvia Douglas Obituary

Sylvia Lynn Wysinger Douglas, 49, was born June 29, 1969, in Benton Harbor, Michigan to her parents the late Carolyn Wysinger and Vannest Brown Jr. of Gary, IN.  She was raised by her loving and faithful grandmother Geneva Wysinger after the passing of Sylvia’s mother.  Sylvia professed her faith in Jesus Christ at an early age.

She married Rodney Douglas on June 9, 2001, in Benton Harbor, MI.  To this union was born one son, Matthew Tyler Douglas.  On February 20, 2019, God saw fit to take her from earth to glory at her home surrounded by family.

Sylvia was known by everybody as “Mooda”, she always had a bright smile on her face, loved meeting new people and would talk, talk, talk your head off.  She was loved for her caring heart, selfless spirit and cheerful enthusiasm to her family and close friends.  Sylvia graduated from Benton Harbor High School in 1987. At a young age, Sylvia would always sing, she sung in numerous talent shows at the high school.

Sylvia graduated from Sister Lake Cosmetology school and later became a licensed cosmetologist. She attended cosmetology school with a special group of sisters who loved Sylvia dearly.  She started her career as a hairdresser at Lady T’s Barbershop for 22 years.  Sylvia specialized in barbering for men and children.  She performed many first-time haircuts on little boys throughout the city.  Except when it came to little Matthew, he was not having it, therefore, we had to move Matt over to Lyman’s barber chair.  Later in life, she decided to change careers to retail.  Sylvia worked at Target for 8 years, she left Target after illness came over her.

She leaves to cherish her memories, husband Rodney Douglas of 17 years.  One son that she loved much Matthew Tyler Douglas.  Two stepdaughters Amanda and Rod’Ja Douglas and one stepson Rodney Douglas, Jr.  Her parents Vannest (Patty) Brown, Gary, IN. One brother Corry Jamal Wysinger of Albion, MI.  Three step-brothers Vannest (Janet) Brown III of Brentwood, CA, Jerome (Marqueta) Brown of Jacksonville, FL, and Darell Brown of Indianapolis, IN.  Sister from another mother, Nicol Brown.  Very special aunt Mary (Steve) Wooden. Special cousins Teresa Bledsoe & Kimberly Brown. Host of nieces and nephews Nechelle Wysinger, Cortney Williams, Cliffton (Tomiko) Brown, Evon (Kristin) Brown, Chantell Brown, Elijah Curry, Stasha (Eligin) Anderson, Chea Brown, Tyshanna Brown, Talisha Brown, and Jamal Lewis.  Goddaughter Katelin Marie King.  Sylvia is also survived by aunts, uncles, cousins and close friends.

Sylvia is preceded in death by her mother Carolyn Wysinger, maternal grandparents Hardie & Geneva Wysinger, and paternal grandparents Muriel Buchanan and Vannest Brown Sr.

Sylvia loved us all so dearly; we loved her too and she will be missed by all of us.
