Roy B. Garrett, 86, of Benton Harbor, Michigan quietly passed away on August 22, 2017 in the comfort of his home with his loving family by his side. A Celebration of Life will take place on Friday, September 1, 2017 from 6pm-9pm at Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church. His Homegoing service will be Saturday, September 2, 2017 at 11:00am at Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church with visitation from 10:00am until the time of service. Burial will take place at Northshore Memory Gardens. Pastor Eddie Wright will officiate. 

He was born January 26, 1931, in Franklinton, Louisiana to the late Eddie and Sylvia Garrett. Mr. Garrett was the oldest of six boys and one girl and his grandparents (Elijah and Lozannie Brown) heavily influenced his upbringing. Mr. Garrett attended Washington Parish Elementary and Washington Parish High School in Franklinton, Louisiana. He surrendered to Christ at an early age and was a member of Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Franklinton, Louisiana under the leadership of the late Rev. Aaron Alexander. As an adolescent, Mr. Garrett sang with his uncle Lawton Brown and his cousin Maurice Henderson in a trio and this sparked his passion for gospel singing.

In 1950, Mr. Garrett married Ruby Robinson and three children were born from this union. Later in life, Mr. Garrett moved to Benton Harbor, Michigan and met Marvenious Taylor. They were married shortly thereafter and nine children were blessed to this union. The couple remained married up until Marvenious death in 2005. Mr. Garrett served as a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Benton Harbor, Michigan under the leadership of the late Rev. Brown and performed with several quartets over the years. His most recent group being that of the “Michigan Soul Revivers”. In addition to singing, Mr. Garrett enjoyed baseball (the Cubs were his favorite team), cooking, gardening, western television shows, joking around and the presence of his family.

Mr. Garrett also worked as a laborer for several companies including Bendix Cooperation and Superior Steel Incorporation. He is survived by his Aunt Mamie B. Garrett of Franklinton, Louisiana; 4 brothers: Elijah Flowers of Atlanta Georgia, Caldwell Flowers of Henrietta, New York, Jimmy Flowers of Kalamazoo, Michigan and Joseph (Nancy) Flowers of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; one sister, Ora Bell Monday of Franklinton, Louisiana; 13 sons: Roy Garrett Jr. of Stone Mountain, Georgia, Melvin (Sylvia) Garrett of Decatur, Georgia, Anthony Taylor of St. Louis, Missouri, Darnell and Bryant Garrett of Benton Harbor, Michigan, Donny Moore of South Bend, Indiana, Jevon (Sarita) Garrett of Charlotte, North Carolina, Bruce Johnson of Cleveland, Ohio, Brett (Pamela) Johnson of Silver Spring, Maryland, Louis, Joshua and William Garrett of Benton Harbor, Michigan and Tyrone Johnson of St. Louis, Missouri; 8 daughters: Vlla Brumfield of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Patricia Garrett Montford of Riverdale, Georgia, Gaylene (Willie) Mitchell of Benton Harbor, Michigan, Natacha Garrett of South Bend, Indiana, Monica Webb and Evelyn Garrett of Decatur, Georgia, Tomika Webb of Toledo, Ohio and Theresa (Nunn) Johnson of Bridgeton, Missouri; a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a special friend, Anna Murray of Covert, Michigan.

Mr. Garrett was preceded in death by: his wife Marvenious A. Garrett, father Eddie D. Garrett, Sr., mother Sylvia Flowers, grandparents Elijah and Lozannie Brown, brothers Eddie D. Garrett Jr. and Kennard Flowers and grandson Antonio Brown.
